Most chain descriptions talk about strength and how long the chain lasts. Those matter, and this one is strong: 10,300 lbs tensile strength, rated to 1300cc street, with EK’s highest wear life rating. But the thing riders actually notice in the first week is different. The ZVX3 runs with less friction between its plates than an OEM chain, and that shows up as a quieter, smoother drivetrain. 120 links, made in Japan, available in multiple finishes.

What You Notice First

It’s quieter. Chain noise comes largely from the plates and rollers moving against each other and striking the sprocket teeth. EK builds the ZVX3 with minimal clearance between the plates, which reduces the slack-and-slap that creates drivetrain noise. On a bike where you’ve been listening to a tired chain, the drop in noise is the first thing you register.

Throttle transitions are smoother. Snatchiness at low speed, that jerk when you roll off and back on in traffic, partly comes from the chain taking up slack. A stiffer chain with tighter tolerances transmits those changes more progressively.

Less friction means more of your power arrives. Every plate rubbing against its neighbour costs a fraction of your engine’s output. Reducing that friction sends more horsepower to the rear wheel instead of turning it into heat in the chain.

None of this will rewrite your bike’s character. It’s the difference between a drivetrain you notice and one you don’t, and on a 1000 to 1300cc machine you ride often, that’s worth something.

Where the Refinement Comes From

Tight plate clearance. This is the core of the design. EK minimises the gap between plates, which improves stiffness and reduces both weight and noise at once.

The NX-ring seal. A narrow X-ring, which is what allows the tighter plate spacing in the first place. It also seals the factory grease around the pins and lasts 15% longer than the seal in the previous ZVX generation. Some EK catalogues list this same seal as a ZX-ring.

Weight-reducing holes. EK removes material from the plates in the lowest-stressed areas. Less mass to accelerate, less surface for dirt to cling to, and better heat dissipation.

The numbers behind it. 10,300 lbs of tensile strength, a 1300cc street rating, and a wear life index of 2,000 against 100 for a standard non-sealed chain. EK describes the ZVX3 as its strongest and longest-lasting street chain.

Finishes

EK produces the 525ZVX3 in a range of finishes. The gold is zinc plated rather than painted or dyed, which is why it holds its appearance through normal road use instead of wearing off.

The metallic options are deep, dark candy-style colours rather than bright ones, so they look quite different in daylight than in a product photo. If you’re choosing one, ask us for a real picture first.

The supplied rivet master link comes in a finish matching the chain. Select your finish from the options above, and if the colour you want isn’t listed, contact us and we’ll check availability.

Before You Order

Your bike must run 525 sprockets. The size is stamped on the front sprocket and usually printed on your current chain’s plates.

Your displacement should be at or below 1300cc. Above that, step up to 530.

Count your links. 120 covers most standard bikes in this class. If your count comes out higher, our 525ZVX3 in 150 links covers stretched and modified setups.

This is a street chain. EK doesn’t rate the ZVX3 for off-road use.

Send us your bike’s make, model, and year and we’ll confirm before you order.

In the Box

One 120-link chain and one rivet master link with its seals and grease, in a finish matching the chain.

The rivet link is permanent and needs a chain riveting tool. EK also makes a screw-type link for this chain, sold separately, which fits with a wrench and pliers. Sprockets are not included, and fitting new ones at the same time is the only way to get the service life this chain is capable of.

When Chain Noise Means Something Is Wrong

A quiet chain is a good diagnostic tool. Once you’re used to how yours sounds, a change tells you something.

A rhythmic clicking that comes and goes as the wheel turns usually means a tight spot, which means uneven wear. Set your tension at the tightest point and plan to replace the chain soon.

A dry rattling or rasping is normally lubrication. Clean and lube before assuming anything worse.

A deep knock on throttle transitions often points to excessive slack rather than the chain itself. Check the adjustment against your manual.

A grinding or scraping noise can mean sprocket misalignment, and that will destroy a chain quickly. Stop and check alignment.

Sudden new noise after a wash often means water has got past the seals or the lube has been stripped. Re-lube and avoid pressure washing the chain in future.

Keeping It That Way

Clean after dusty rides with a cleaner made for sealed chains. Sand bonds to chain lube and grinds at the rollers, and in this climate it’s the fastest way to wear out a good chain. Never use petrol or harsh degreasers, which attack the rubber seals.

Lube the inner face while the chain is warm, let it settle, and wipe off the excess.

Check slack and alignment together, following the range in your owner’s manual.

Who Should Buy This Chain

The rider of a 1000 to 1300cc machine on standard 525 sprockets who wants the best chain available in that size. Anyone whose current chain has become the noisy, notchy part of the bike. And riders who keep their bikes a long time, where a chain that lasts and runs quietly earns its price back.

Being honest: if you want the lightest possible chain, EK’s ThreeD line in 525 is lighter. If your bike runs 530, this won’t fit. And if your chain count is above 120, you need the longer version.

Will this really make my bike quieter?

It should be noticeably quieter than a worn chain, and somewhat quieter than a standard new one, because of the tighter plate clearances. How much depends on how worn your current chain and sprockets are.

Is the gold finish durable?

It's gold zinc plating, a plated finish rather than paint, so it holds up to normal road use. Avoid wire brushes and harsh degreasers and it will keep its appearance.

What's the difference between an NX-ring and a ZX-ring?

They're the same seal. EK's older catalogues use ZX-ring and newer material uses NX-ring, short for Narrow X-ring.

Can I fit it without a riveting tool?

Not with the included rivet link. EK's screw-type link is sold separately and installs with a wrench and pliers.

My bike needs 116 links. Is this correct?

Yes. The chain is cut to length during fitting, so anything at or below 120 works from this box.

How does it compare to the ThreeD Z3D in 525?

The ZVX3 is stronger and lasts longer, rated to 1300cc versus 1200cc. The Z3D is lighter. Choose the ZVX3 for longevity and the Z3D for weight.

Is it suitable for track days?

Yes, EK positions the ZVX3 for competition as well as OEM replacement. Check your class regulations for organised racing.

Is it genuine?

Yes. Made in Japan by Enuma Chain, supplied in the original EK box with the part number printed on it.
