One link, two pins, four seals and a sachet of grease. It’s the cheapest part of your drive system and the only one that wasn’t assembled at the factory, which is exactly why it deserves attention. This is EK’s genuine rivet master link (MLJ) for the 530 Z3D ThreeD chain, supplied individually in black, chrome, or gold.
When Do You Actually Need to Buy One?
A new chain already includes a master link, so most riders never buy one separately. These are the situations where you do.
You’re removing the chain and refitting it. Pulling a chain off for a swingarm job, a wheel change, or painting means cutting the master link. It cannot go back on. You need a new one before the chain goes back.
The original link was lost or damaged. It happens during a workshop job, or a link gets dropped and the tiny seals disappear into the floor.
The rivet was done badly. A master link that was riveted incorrectly needs replacing, not re-riveting. Don’t gamble on it.
You bought an open-box or incomplete chain. Some discounted chains are sold without the master link because it went missing from the packaging.
You keep a spare. Riders who do their own chain work often keep one in the toolbox, because a chain job stalls completely without it.
The Rule Nobody Should Break: Never Reuse a Rivet Link
A rivet master link is a single-use part. Riveting deforms the pin ends permanently to lock the plate in place. Pressing that same link back together a second time gives you a joint that looks right and isn’t, because the pin ends have already been worked and the seals have already been compressed.
A chain that fails at the master link at speed can lock the rear wheel or damage the engine case. For the price of this part, there is no argument for reusing one.
The same applies to the seals. The four O-rings and the grease in the packet are part of the link, not extras. Fit the new seals that came with it.
This Link Is Rivet Only
Worth knowing before you order. Some EK chain ranges, including the SRX2 and ZVX3 series, offer a screw-type or clip-type connecting link as an alternative for riders without a riveting tool. The Z3D range does not. The MLJ rivet link is the only connecting link EK makes for this chain.
That means a chain riveting tool is required, with no shortcut. If you don’t own one, the job belongs in a workshop. A clip link from another chain is not a substitute and must never be fitted to a Z3D chain.
It Must Match Your Exact Chain
This is where orders go wrong. A master link has to match not just the chain size but the chain series.
A 530 link does not fit a 525 or 520 chain, because the widths differ. Just as important, a link from a different 530 series, such as an SRX2 or ZVX3, is not interchangeable with a Z3D chain. The plate thickness, pin length, and seal design are specific to each series.
Check the side plates of your chain. A Z3D chain carries ThreeD markings, and the chain came in a ThreeD box. If your chain is a different EK series, you need that series’ link instead, and we can help you identify it.
Fitting It Properly
Grease the pins and the seals. The sachet is there for a reason. Spread it on the pins and the seal rings before assembly, not after.
Seat the seals in the right order. Seals go between the inner plate and the outer plate on each pin. Four seals, two per pin. Getting this wrong means the joint isn’t sealed and the grease escapes.
Press the outer plate to the correct depth. The outer plate must sit at the same width as the rest of the chain’s plates, no tighter and no looser. Press it too far and the link binds and won’t articulate. Measure against a neighbouring link.
Flare the pin ends evenly. The riveting tool spreads the hollow pin tips to lock the plate. Both pins need an even flare. Uneven riveting is the most common fault.
Check it moves freely. Once riveted, the link should flex as easily as every other link in the chain. If it’s stiff, something is wrong, and a stiff link will cause a tight spot and wear the chain unevenly.
Inspect it after the first ride. Look at the flared pin ends after your first few hundred kilometres. They should be unchanged.
Who This Is For
Riders refitting a chain after a workshop job. Anyone who lost or damaged the original link. Home mechanics who keep a spare so a chain job never stalls. And anyone who has been offered a cheap unbranded link and decided against it.
Being honest: if you don’t have a chain riveting tool, buying this link won’t get you any further on its own. There’s no clip or screw version for the Z3D chain, so the tool or a workshop is the only route.

My new chain already came with a master link. Do I need this?
Not for the first fitting. You need this when you remove the chain, lose the original link, or have to replace a badly fitted one.
Can I reuse my old master link?
No. A rivet link is single use. The pin ends are permanently deformed when riveted, and a reused link is a serious safety risk.
Is there a clip or screw version for the Z3D chain?
No. EK makes the Z3D connecting link in rivet type only. Other EK series such as SRX2 and ZVX3 offer screw or clip options, the Z3D does not.
Will a 530 link from another EK chain fit my Z3D?
No. The link must match the series as well as the size. Plate thickness, pin length, and seals differ between series.
What's included?
The connecting link with pins, the O-ring seals, and a grease sachet. One link per package.
Do I need a special tool?
Yes, a chain riveting tool. There is no way to fit a rivet link correctly without one.
Which colour should I choose?
Match your chain. Black, chrome, and gold are available so the joint blends with the rest of the chain.
Is it genuine EK?
Yes. Made in Japan by Enuma Chain and supplied in EK packaging with the part number.
