ICON ULTRAFLITE GLOSS BLACK MIPS Helmet

The ICON Ultraflite is a full face helmet with a handcrafted composite fibreglass shell in gloss black, fitted with MIPS.

Certified to DOT FMVSS 218, ECE 22.06 and PSC. It ships with a Pinlock ready clear Ultrashield and accepts the HelmLink communication unit.

Three Shells Instead of One

Many helmets are built on a single shell across every size, with thicker padding added for the smaller sizes. The result is that a small headed rider carries a helmet sized for someone much larger.

The Ultraflite uses three shells:

• Shell one: XS and S
• Shell two: M and L
• Shell three: XL through 3XL

Your helmet matches your head on the outside as well as the inside. In practice that means less bulk above the head, better proportion, and less load on the neck over long rides. If weight is your first priority, the Ultraflite Carbon takes the same shell further.

Adjusting the Internal Padding

Within a shell size you can swap the internal padding to tighten or loosen the fit slightly.

This solves a problem every helmet buyer knows: one size feels a little loose, the next feels a little tight. Instead of choosing between them, take the correct shell and adjust the padding.

Practical advice: do not change padding in the first week. Cheek pads compress naturally over the first fifteen to twenty hours of riding. Wait for the fit to settle, then decide whether you actually need an adjustment.

Ten to Fifteen Millimetres of Movement

MIPS in this helmet allows multi directional movement of ten to fifteen millimetres during certain angled impacts.

That figure is the whole idea. In an angled fall the helmet slides slightly around your head for a fraction of a second instead of pulling your head with it immediately. The distance is small. Cutting the rotation that reaches the brain is the goal.

The system reduces risk rather than removing it, and any helmet that takes an impact must be replaced.

Pinlock Ready Shield

The included Ultrashield is made with zero optical distortion, carries an anti fog treatment, and is prepared to accept a Pinlock insert.

A Pinlock lens is a second layer that fixes to the inside of the shield and creates a sealed air gap, which is the most effective answer to fogging in humid and cool conditions. Sold separately.

Here, fogging shows up on early coastal mornings in Jeddah, Dammam and Khobar, and when you stop at a light after riding at speed. If most of your riding falls into those conditions, a Pinlock insert is worth adding.

An Important Note on Changing Shields

The ECE 22.06 approval covers the helmet with its approved shield fitted.

If you fit a replacement shield that is not approved to the same standard, the certification no longer applies to the helmet as a complete unit, even though the shell itself is unchanged.

When buying a replacement, make sure it is a genuine Ultrashield from our ICON shields range, or an ECE 22.06 approved equivalent. This is easy to overlook when buying a tinted or mirrored shield from the general market.

Black Paint in Saudi Sun

Black absorbs more heat than lighter colours like the Ultraflite Gloss White. That is simple physics and you will notice it if the helmet sits in direct sun.

Practical habit: do not leave the helmet on the seat or the fuel tank in open sunlight. The shell and liner heat up, and the first five minutes after you put it on are genuinely unpleasant. Keep it in shade, in your luggage, or resting opening down on the seat.

While riding the difference shrinks considerably, because airflow through the helmet matters far more than the colour of the surface.

The Speedwing Venting System

Ventilation runs through four intakes, the largest being the chin vent, and two rear exhaust ports, with channels cut into the EPS foam.

What is specific here is the Speedwing system, a recessed twin channel set into the shell surface that moves air along the helmet's profile rather than protruding into the airflow. Air moves efficiently with less wind noise at speed.

As with any full face helmet, ventilation depends on movement and drops off naturally at a standstill in summer.

Day to Day Maintenance

Liner: the Hydradry comes out completely. Wash in lukewarm water with mild soap and dry in shade rather than direct sun. Roughly every two weeks through summer.

Gloss shell: rinse dust off with lukewarm water before wiping, then dry with clean microfibre. Gloss paint takes automotive wax made for clear coat.

Shield: mild soap, water and a soft cloth only. Never wax or polish a shield, because the anti fog treatment will be destroyed. If a Pinlock insert is fitted, remove it before washing the shield.

Before You Buy

The Ultraflite is built on an intermediate oval head shape. If your head is a distinct long oval, try it on first, because pressure will show at the forehead.
