ICON Ultraflite Opal Mandala Blue MIPS Helmet

Most helmet graphics are printed and done. This one changes as you move. The ICON Ultraflite Opal Mandala Blue is a full face helmet finished in ICON's color-shifting Opal paint, so the intricate mandala pattern drifts between deep blue, teal, and violet depending on the light and your angle to it. Park it in the sun and watch people stop. Under that finish sits the full Ultraflite platform: a handmade composite shell, MIPS protection, and the newest European safety certification. It is the artistic sibling of the Ultraflite family, built for riders who want their gear to say something quieter than skulls but harder to ignore.

The Opal Paint Is the Whole Point

ICON layered a geometric mandala graphic under a color-shift coat, the kind of paint treatment you normally see on custom tanks, not production helmets. Every curve of the shell catches light differently, so the helmet never photographs the same way twice. The lid also carries ICON's revised Speedwing rear spoiler, which sharpens the profile and helps stability at speed. If the Ultraflite Misanthrope is a metal album cover, this one is closer to fine ink work, detailed, symmetrical, and calm. Nothing else in the ICON helmet lineup looks like it, and the same Opal treatment is available in a second colorway, the Ultraflite Opal Mandala.

Same Serious Protection Underneath

The shell is composite fiberglass (FRP), laid up by hand. FRP earns its place in premium helmets because it spreads and absorbs crash energy well without the bulk of cheaper thermoplastic shells, and the lower weight saves your neck on long days. If weight is the deciding factor for you, the Ultraflite Carbon MIPS trims it further with a carbon fiber shell.

Between that shell and your head sits MIPS, and it is worth understanding rather than just reading the acronym. Real crashes almost never land flat. They land at an angle, and the angle snaps your head into rotation, which is how many of the worst brain injuries happen. The MIPS layer lets the helmet slide 10 to 15 millimeters around your head during that first instant of an angled hit, bleeding off rotational force before it reaches your brain.

Certification is where this helmet quietly outclasses much of the market. It meets DOT FMVSS 218, Japan's PSC, and Europe's ECE 22.06, the current standard that added rotational impact testing. A lot of helmets still on shelves carry the retired 22.05 rating. Checking for that "06" is one of the simplest ways to separate current protection from old stock, and this helmet passes it.

The cheek pads use an emergency release design, so first responders can pull them free and lift the helmet off with minimal neck movement. You hope it never matters. It is the kind of feature you want anyway.

Vision Control for Bright Days and Cold Mornings

The main shield is ICON's quick-change Ultrashield, fog free and swappable in seconds without tools, and a clear Pinlock-prepared shield comes in the box for night rides and low light (the Pinlock anti-fog lens itself is sold separately). Behind the main shield hides the DropShield Ultra, an oversized internal sun visor operated by a switch on the outside of the shell. Gloved hands work it easily. Sun drops low, you flick it down, and you keep riding instead of squinting. ICON notes the internal visor should only be used while the main face shield is fully closed.

Cool Head, Quiet Ride

Ventilation runs through four intakes, including a motocross-style chin vent, and out through two exhaust ports. The EPS liner inside is cut with deep channels and the recessed twin-channel Supervent system, so incoming air actually travels across your scalp instead of dying at the vent opening. In hot weather that airflow is the difference you feel at every stoplight.

The liner is Hydradry moisture-wicking fabric with soft Ax Suede at the contact points, fully removable and washable, so summer sweat never becomes a permanent smell. A removable chin curtain blocks wind noise from below, and a removable breath deflector keeps your shield clear on cold mornings.

Add Comms When You're Ready

The Ultraflite is designed around ICON's HelmLink Bluetooth system, sold separately alongside our other motorcycle Bluetooth intercoms. Speaker recesses and mounting are part of the helmet's architecture, so installing music, navigation, calls, and intercom later is a clean job rather than a foam-carving project.

Fit and Sizing

Head shape is intermediate oval, slightly longer front to back, which fits the majority of riders comfortably. Measure your head with a soft tape just above the eyebrows and ears at the widest point, then match the number to ICON's size chart. Done right, the helmet grips evenly all around, your cheeks move with the chin bar when you shake it, and nothing presses hard enough to notice after ten minutes.
