120 links is the length most 530-size performance bikes actually run, which makes this the straight replacement for the chain your bike came with, only stronger. The 530ZVX3 is rated at 49.4 kN (11,100 lbs), approved for street use up to 1400cc, and carries EK’s highest wear life rating. Sealed with the NX-ring, made in Japan, and available in a choice of finishes.

Why Riders Replace a Working Factory Chain

Most people buy a chain because the old one is finished. Some buy this one before that point, and the reasons are worth knowing.

The factory chain is a compromise. Manufacturers specify a chain that meets the bike’s needs at a cost that works across tens of thousands of units. It’s adequate, not optimal. EK supplies the ZVX3 as both a competition chain and an OEM replacement, which means it’s built to a different brief than the part it replaces.

Power gains outgrow the original spec. Fit an exhaust, remap the engine, change the gearing, and you’re asking more of the same chain. The 1400cc street rating and 11,100 lbs of tensile strength give you headroom the stock chain was never designed to provide.

Service intervals cost more than chains. EK rates the ZVX3 at a wear life index of 2,000 against 100 for a standard non-sealed chain, the highest in their street range. On a machine where a chain and sprocket change means a workshop visit, fitting a chain that goes the distance is usually cheaper over time than fitting two ordinary ones.

Fit and finish. A range of finish options means the chain can match the bike rather than just being the part that drives the rear wheel.

What the Chain Is Actually Made Of

A common question, and the answer is simple. The chain is steel. Gold, chrome, black and the metallic colours are plated or coated finishes applied over that steel, not different materials. The strength figures are identical across every finish.

What does change with finish is appearance and, to a small degree, care. Plating sits on the surface, so a wire brush or an aggressive degreaser will mark gold and metallic finishes faster than it will mark natural steel. A soft brush and a cleaner made for sealed chains keeps any of them looking right.

Select your finish from the options above. If the one you want isn’t listed, contact us and we’ll check availability in 120 links.

Is 120 Links the Right Length?

Count the links on your current chain before ordering. Mark one link with paint, rotate the wheel, and count all the way back to your mark.

If the answer is 120 or a little under, this is your chain. It will be cut to your exact number during fitting, and you won’t be paying for links you throw away.

If the answer is higher than 120, you need a longer version. EK makes the 530ZVX3 in 130, 140, 150, and 160 links, and our 150-link listing covers stretched and modified bikes.

If you have changed either sprocket, your old count no longer applies. A larger rear sprocket adds chain length, so work the figure out from the new sprocket sizes rather than reusing the old number.

What You Get in the Box

One 120-link chain and one rivet-type master link (MLJ) with its seals and grease. The rivet link is supplied in a finish to match the chain.

The rivet link is permanent and needs a chain riveting tool to press and flare the pin. EK also produces a screw-type link (SLJ) for this chain, sold separately, which installs with a wrench and pliers instead of a riveting tool. It exists because racers needed a secure link they could fit without carrying a rivet tool. For a road bike making serious power, the rivet link remains the stronger choice.

What you do not get is sprockets. Fit new ones at the same time. Worn teeth take on a hooked profile that chews through a new chain quickly, and on a 1400cc machine they do it fast.

The First 500 Kilometres

A new chain behaves differently when it’s new, and the first few hundred kilometres set up the rest of its life.

Expect it to take up slack early. Almost every chain loses a small amount of initial slack as it beds in. Check the tension after the first couple of hundred kilometres rather than waiting for your normal service interval, then adjust to the range in your manual.

Ride it in gently at first. Hard launches on a chain that hasn’t settled put uneven load through links that haven’t seated yet. A few easy hundred kilometres costs you nothing and helps.

Check alignment before you check anything else. If the sprockets aren’t aligned, every other adjustment is built on a fault, and the chain will wear unevenly from day one.

Leave the factory grease alone. The NX-rings seal lubricant inside the pins at the factory. Don’t try to wash it out or force fresh lube past the seals. Lube goes on the inner face of the chain to protect the rollers and the outside, while the sealed grease looks after the inside.

Keeping It Alive in Gulf Conditions

Fine sand is the real enemy here. It bonds to chain lube and turns it into a grinding compound that works at the rollers every rotation. Clean after dusty rides using a cleaner made for sealed X-ring and NX-ring chains. Petrol, harsh degreasers and strong solvents attack the rubber seals and release the grease that the chain depends on.

Lube the inner face while the chain is still warm from riding, let it settle before you ride again, and wipe off the excess so it doesn’t fling onto the wheel and bodywork.

Keep the pressure washer away from the chain. High pressure forces water past the seals, and once the sealed grease is gone it cannot be replaced.

Who Should Buy This Chain

The owner of a standard 1000 to 1400cc machine whose chain is due and who wants to fit something better than the original. The rider who has added power and realised the chain is now the limiting part. And anyone who would rather spend more once than do the job twice.

Being honest: if your bike is unmodified, ridden moderately and you change chains without complaint, EK’s other 530 options cost less and will serve you fine. If your bike needs more than 120 links, this length won’t fit. And if you ride off-road, EK specifically does not recommend this chain for it.

Is this chain gold or steel?

Both. The chain is made of steel, and gold is a plated finish over it. Strength is identical across every finish.

What's the difference between natural and chrome?

Natural is unplated steel with a plain grey appearance. Chrome is plated and noticeably brighter. Chrome also adds a thin layer of surface protection.

Can I fit it without a chain riveting tool?

Not with the supplied rivet link. EK's screw-type link (SLJ) is sold separately and fits with a wrench and pliers. For a high-power street bike we'd still recommend the rivet link.

My bike needs 114 links. Is this still right?

Yes. The chain is cut to length during installation, so any requirement at or below 120 works from this box.

Why is it listed as not recommended off-road?

EK's distributor data marks the 530ZVX3 as not recommended for off-road use rather than giving it a dirt rating. It's built for road and track. Use an off-road chain for dirt.

How is this different from the ThreeD Z3D in 530?

Different series. The ZVX3 chases maximum strength and service life with the NX-ring seal. The ThreeD uses a three-dimensional plate shape and QX2 seals to deliver strength at lower weight. The ZVX3 is the stronger and longer-lasting of the two, and the heavier.

Does the master link colour match the chain?

Yes, the rivet link is supplied in a matching finish.

Is it genuine?

Yes. Made in Japan by Enuma Chain and supplied in the original EK box with the part number printed on it.
