Here is the trick Scorpion pulled with the EXO-391: they took the Ellip-Tec visor system from their MotoGP-grade EXO-R1 flagship, wrapped it in a clean matt black polycarbonate shell, certified the whole thing to the newest ECE 22.06 standard, and priced it where first helmets live. The result is the cheapest way into a real Scorpion full face helmet, with the same visor sealing hardware their champions race behind.

Key Features

  • Certified ECE 22.06, tested at 18 impact points on the shell where the old standard checked only 6
  • Ellip-Tec ratchet system, inherited from Scorpion's flagship racing helmets: spring force pulls the visor tight against its seal, and swaps take seconds without tools
  • Injected polycarbonate shell in 2 shell sizes, sizes XS to XXL
  • Matt black solid finish across the shell
  • Pinlock MaxVision prepared visor with a wide field of view, scratch-resistant and UV-protective (Pinlock lens sold separately)
  • Central visor lock plus a breath guard against fogging
  • KwikWick C liner: temperature-balancing, anti-microbial, moisture-wicking, fully removable and washable
  • KwikFit 3D cheek pads with channels for eyeglasses
  • Emergency quick release cheek pads for safe removal by medics
  • Speaker pockets ready for a Bluetooth communication system
  • Micrometric buckle, one-motion open and close with gloves
  • Adjustable top vent, chin vent, rear exhausts, and air channels cut into the EPS
  • Aero-tuned rear spoiler for stability
  • Chin curtain included
  • Measured weight 1580 g in size M (independent test)
  • Intermediate-to-long oval fit suiting most head shapes

The Flagship Parts That Trickled Down

The Ellip-Tec system is the headline. On most budget helmets the visor sits loosely against a rubber strip and whistles at speed. The EXO-391 carries the same spring-loaded ratchet Scorpion fits to its top racing helmets: it actively pulls the visor into its gasket for an airtight seal, cuts wind noise, and lets you swap the visor in seconds with no tools. Finding this hardware at this price is the whole reason the EXO-391 exists.

The certification does the talking. ECE 22.06 is not a sticker upgrade; the test hammers 18 points on the shell instead of the old 6, adds rotational impact measurement, and applies harder limits throughout. Plenty of pricier helmets on the market still carry the old approval. This one passed the new exam.

Comfort engineering from the expensive shelf. The KwikWick C liner balances temperature, fights bacteria, wicks sweat, and pulls out for washing after a hot week. The 3D cheek pads carry proper channels for eyeglass arms, and the micrometric buckle clicks open one-handed with gloves. Even the emergency quick release, a feature entry helmets routinely skip, is here so medics can remove the cheek pads safely after a crash.

Ready for your intercom on day one. Speaker pockets are molded in, so a Cardo or a budget unit like the Sena 5R Lite drops into place without carving foam. For group riders on a budget, that detail alone shortlists this helmet.

Straight Talk: What It Does Not Have

No internal sun visor: at this price Scorpion spent the budget on the Ellip-Tec system and the 22.06 shell instead. Riders who want a drop-down sun visor at entry money should look at the Shark Ridill 2 in our store; riders who want the better visor seal, speaker pockets, and emergency release choose the EXO-391.

Want the sun visor and Scorpion's Ellip-Tec together? The Scorpion EXO-491 matt black adds the drop-down shade one step up the range.

And the Pinlock anti-fog lens is prepared for, not included; in dry inland air most riders never miss it, and coastal riders can add the MaxVision lens from our helmet accessories collection to the order.

Is This Your First Scorpion?

It fits the rider stepping up from a no-name helmet who wants a real brand and the newest certification without the price shock. The commuter who cares more about a sealed, quiet visor than a sun shade. The group rider planning an intercom from day one. And anyone building an all-matt-black setup around solid engineering instead of graphics.

Racing ambitions or a carbon appetite? The same Ellip-Tec system waits for you up the range in our Scorpion EXO-R1 EVO II. The EXO-391 is where that ladder starts. Every rung in between is in the full Scorpion EXO helmet collection.

What is the difference between the EXO-391 and the Shark Ridill 2?

Both are entry full faces with ECE 22.06, micrometric buckles, washable liners, and glasses-friendly interiors. The Ridill 2 adds an internal sun visor and runs about 110 g lighter. The EXO-391 answers with the flagship Ellip-Tec visor seal, molded speaker pockets, and emergency release cheek pads. Sun shade versus sealing and comm-readiness: pick your priority, we stock both.

Does it have a sun visor?

No, and we say it plainly because one listing site wrongly claims otherwise. There is no drop-down sun visor on the EXO-391. A tinted or dark replacement visor is the usual solution, and the Ellip-Tec system makes swapping visors a seconds-long job.

Is the Pinlock lens included?

No, the visor is Pinlock MaxVision prepared and the lens sells separately. The included breath guard already reduces fogging, and in dry Gulf air many riders run without a Pinlock entirely.

Why does ECE 22.06 matter on a budget helmet?

Because the test is the same one the expensive helmets face: 18 impact points instead of 6, rotational measurements, stricter limits. A budget shell that passed it protects to the same certified floor as a flagship. Price buys refinement; the certification floor is identical.

Can I fit a Bluetooth intercom?

Yes, easily: the speaker pockets are already molded into the interior, and the shell side takes standard mounts. This is one of the cheapest 22.06 helmets that arrives genuinely comm-ready.

How do I care for the matt black shell?

Water, mild soap, soft microfiber, and never any polish or wax, which permanently glosses matte finishes. Soak dried bugs with a wet cloth before wiping.

Can I keep using the helmet after a serious crash?

The rule above all rules: the helmet is engineered to protect through exactly one serious impact. The EPS liner crushes invisibly as it does its job, so after any hard hit, retire it gratefully and replace it.
